It’s that time of year again
- Spring Break!
February 28 through April
10 is Spring
Break season in the Bahamas,
and that means all kinds of fun in the sun for vacationing college
and high school students.
Exciting beach parties, festivals, and
sports competitions are some of the highlights of a packed Spring
Break calendar filled
with local food, music, and celebrations.
The people of the Bahamas
have worked hard to make sure that your spring getaway will be a
memorable one, so come on down!
If sailing is your passion, you won’t want
to miss the annual Bacardi
Rum Cup on Nassau/Paradise
Island, hosted by the Royal
Nassau Sailing Club. In addition to some fiercely
competitive sailing, the festivities include lots of local food
and live performances by an authentic rake ’n scrape band. The Snipe
Winter Championship on Nassau/Paradise Island is
another international sailing event celebrating the snipe, a
15.5’ two-man racing dinghy. This competition brings together
world-class snipe sailors in two fiercely contested series: the Bacardi Cup Series, a three-race
event held on March 19-20, and the Dudley
Gamblin Cup Series, a five-race event held on March
20-22. Want to pretend you’re a snipe sailor yourself? Spectator
boats are available for all events to take you in for a close-up
view of the races. For more information about any of these sailing
competitions, contact Peter Christie of the Royal
Nassau Sailing Club at (242) 322-1041/3.
There’s nothing quite like the thrill of
world-class sporting events to take your mind off exams and term
papers! Hundreds of sports fans flock to the Bahamas
each year during Spring Break as both spectators and participants.
The Annual
Cricket Tournament on Grand
Bahama Island, March 27 through April 5, brings
together players from Barbados, England, and the United States for
10 days of play. For rugby enthusiasts, an internationally
flavored competition ensues when visiting teams from Hong Kong,
Qatar, Europe, Jamaica, Canada, and the U.S.A. meet on Grand Bahama to compete in the
Freeport Rugby Club Annual Easter Rugby Festival.
To get a close-up view of local customs,
food, artwork, and music, you’re invited to join Bahamians in
celebrating during any of the annual festivals and fairs that take
place during the Spring Break season.
For example,
the Annual
Red Cross Fair on Nassau/Paradise
Island, usually held the first Saturday in March, is a
charitable event held under the patronage of the wife of the Governor
General of The Bahamas. The fair is a fun-filled,
festive event featuring games and regional music along with a
scrumptious array of native and international foods. A highlight
of the fair is the proud performance by the internationally
renowned Royal
Bahamas Police Force Band. Another popular celebration,
the annual Pineapple
Art Festival in Gregory Town, Eleuthera, is a festive
showcase of the finest in local arts and crafts, featuring
original watercolors, oils, acrylics, paintings on driftwood,
indigenous basketry, and an array of creative crafts and paintings
designed by amateur artisans throughout Eleuthera.
You’re also welcome to enjoy local music, and sample a
tantalizing variety of island culinary delights such as pastries
and preserves.
So what are you waiting for? The Bahamas
has hundreds of fun events and activities to make your Spring
Break vacation exciting and memorable. The front desk
of your hotel will have the most current and up-to-date Spring
Break information, or you can telephone the Ministry
of Tourism in Nassau at (242) 322-7500. See you soon! |
